Skateboard Shelves
If you’re looking for a way to add some fun to the decorating scheme of your child’s bedroom or playroom, consider installing some skateboard shelves. Made from actual skateboards, these unique shelves can bring that touch of fun into any room, while also adding some needed extra storage space for toys, books, collectibles, etc.
Skateboard shelves can be found in just about any color you can imagine. You can purchase “unfinished” skateboard shelves that maintain their original look, or “finished” shelves that are custom painted to fit your color scheme while still maintaining the shape of the skateboard deck from which they are constructed. A bonus of an “unfinished” skateboard shelf is that the grips on the top side of the deck help the items displayed there to stay in place.
Especially if you’ve got a skateboarder in the house, you may consider making your own skateboard shelves out of old skateboards. There are a few ways you can accomplish this.
Unfinished DIY Skateboard Shelf
For a single shelf, you can easily install a couple of shelf brackets, and simply set the old skateboard, as is, atop the brackets. An inexpensive set of standard metal brackets suits the nature and the look of this particular DIY project just fine.
You could also consider installing multiple skateboard shelves, as a wall unit. To accomplish this way-cool project, simply attach a pair of hanging standards to the wall, put in multiple pairs of hanging brackets, and place each of your old skateboards atop the brackets.
There’s no need to spend a lot of money on your skateboard shelves. If you don’t happen to have old, abandoned skateboards lying around, of course you can go out and purchase new skateboards, but they don’t have to be the expensive, high-performance variety—they are only for display purposes, after all.
Finished DIY Skateboard Shelf
If you would like to bring the “fun” of skateboard shelves into your child’s room, but would still like to maintain a more refined look, simply “finish” the skateboard before turning it into a shelf. You’ll probably want to remove the wheels and wheel mounts from the skateboard, and follow that step with sanding the skateboard deck and then painting it whatever color you like. To accomplish the full effect of this project, you’ll also want to consider a different type of shelf bracket than the metal brackets used with the unfinished shelf project. A pair (or multiple pairs, if installing a full shelf unit) of wooden brackets, either as is, or painted to match your skateboard, will complete the finished look of your new skateboard shelf (or shelves.)
While the first place that comes to mind with the mention of skateboard shelves is a child’s bedroom or playroom, they also make a unique accessory for the family game room or even the garage. And skateboards can finally be allowed in the house, when you quickly, easily and inexpensively create and install your own custom skateboard shelves!
